Committee Representing the People's Parliament

On September 16th 1998, the National League for Democracy  announced that they had formed a committee to represent the parliament elected in 1990, but never allowed to meet.   This was the party's fulfilment of a pledge to convene parliament if there were no progress towards a negotiated settlement by August 21st, 1998.  In response to the formation of the Committee, some 900 elected members of parliament and supporters of the NLD have been arrested.
