The Committee Representing the People's Parliament (CRPP)"Notifications of the Committee Representing the People's Parliament"
|
The Committee Representing the People's Parliament (CRPP) is constituted by representatives of the political parties that won the vast majority of seats in the 1990 democratic election, including the National League for Democracy. The Committee, formed in September 1998, has ten members and is chaired by Saw Mra Aung of the Arakan National League for Democracy. Several members of the Committee have been arrested, including Dr. Saw Mra Aung, who at 80 is one of Burma's oldest political prisoners. The Committee, described by some journalists as the democratic opposition's "showdown with the junta," is acting as an executive committee of the parliament, most of whose members are in prison, exile or detention. The CRPP has proxies from 251 of the surviving members of parliament who have given the Committee the mandate to convene the full parliament as soon as possible and to act on their behalf in the meantime. Through its public "Notifications of the Committee
Representing the People's Parliament", the CRPP is acting on behalf of the
parliament elected in 1990. |
